Two things share the word. Formative assessment is the practice of checking understanding while there is still time to act; we cover it on the page about formative assessment. Formative is also a product at formative.com. This page is about the product.
Source note. What I say about Formative is from its public site at formative.com, read in October 2026. The site has moved from the older goformative.com address. Check it for current plans; I did not find a price I could quote.
What Formative says it is
It describes an AI-powered instructional and assessment platform. Teachers create interactive lessons, assign assessments, and see student progress instantly as answers come in. Its site lists dozens of question types, standards tagging, automatic grading for many question types, embedded media, real-time teacher feedback, student practice, voice recording responses, and AI creation tools. It describes a free plan for creating assignments with basic question types and viewing responses, and a paid tier for schools and districts adding more analytics, more question types, bulk rostering and collaboration tools. It says it integrates with Google Classroom, Clever, ClassLink and other systems, for rostering, single sign-on and assignments.
Where Formative is the better choice
- Watching answers arrive. The core of the product is seeing student work as it happens and responding. ClassSense has no live response view.
- Question variety. Dozens of types, including drawing and voice responses. ClassSense student practice is multiple choice.
- Standards tagging. ClassSense has no standards library or tagging.
- School systems. If you need rostering or sign-in through Google Classroom, Clever or ClassLink, Formative lists them. ClassSense has no Google sign-in, rostering import or gradebook sync.
- Your own assessments, exactly as written. You decide every item.
What ClassSense does differently
With Formative, the teacher is the author. You build the assessment, assign it, and read the results. With ClassSense you upload a PDF, Word file or PowerPoint from your unit and it builds up to ten skill packs: an explanation at three depths, worked examples, named misconceptions, strategy variants and multiple-choice practice. Packs that fail its quality checks are held, and you can review, reorder or remove anything. Students then practice on their own, and a mastery status builds for each student on each skill: Struggling, Developing, Approaching, Mastered.
The practical contrast is about time. A Formative assessment gives you a sharp picture of one moment, and it is a strong tool when you wrote the questions to probe exactly the thing you taught that day. ClassSense gives you a running picture of many skills across weeks, and the practice and explanations are there for the student, not just the check. Writing all that yourself is the cost ClassSense is trying to remove. On grading, ClassSense scores multiple choice asstudents answer and does not grade written answers; the page on auto-grading has the specifics.
Picking one
- You want to write precise checks and watch answers live: Formative.
- You want practice and explanations produced from your unit, with a mastery grid: ClassSense.
- You want both a sharp check and ongoing practice: use Formative for the check and ClassSense for the practice. The quick end-of-lesson version of this is covered under exit tickets.
Who should not switch. If your school runs on Google Classroom, Clever or ClassLink and you need rostering and assignment links, Formative fits that and ClassSense does not today. If you like writing your own assessments and using standards tags, stay. ClassSense is $19 a month for an individual teacher, unlimited courses and students, first 30 days free, no card. Read our Google Classroom page for how ClassSense works without that connection.
Common questions
Is this page about the teaching idea or the product?
The product at formative.com. The teaching idea has its own page on formative assessment.
Does ClassSense connect to Google Classroom the way Formative lists?
No. ClassSense has no Google Classroom, Clever or ClassLink connection and no Google sign-in. Students join with a six-character class code.
Can I build my own questions in ClassSense?
ClassSense generates practice from your upload, and you can review, reorder or remove anything. It is not an item-by-item assessment builder.
Can I use Formative and ClassSense together?
Yes. Formative for a sharp check you wrote, ClassSense for the ongoing practice and the mastery record.
