Ask a teacher what they would do with five hours back and almost nobody says they would write more assessments. They say they would plan better, or call more parents, or go home. Grading is the tax that makes those impossible.
What gets graded automatically
Selected-response items and structured practice are scored the moment a student answers. That covers the overwhelming bulk of what a class generates in a week: the exit tickets, the practice sets, the review rounds, the retakes.
Each scored answer records more than right or wrong. It stores the skill, the difficulty at the time, time spent, hints used, attempt number, and the student's mastery before and after. That is why the result is a picture of learning rather than a column of numbers.
What still needs you
Extended writing, projects, anything where the judgment is the point. There is no honest way to automate that, and a tool claiming otherwise is selling something. What changes is that your judgment is no longer competing for attention with three hundred multiple-choice items.
The gradebook as a by-product
Because scoring happens continuously, there is nothing to enter. Open the dashboard and the current state is already there: who is stuck, which skill the class is weakest on, who finished a unit and needs the next thing. ClassSense notifies you when a student gets stuck or completes a unit, so attention goes where it is needed without you auditing every row.
A note on trust. Auto-grading only earns trust if you can check it. Every item is visible and editable in the review queue before it ever reaches a student, so the questions being scored are questions you approved.
Common questions
Does it grade essays?
No. Extended writing needs a human reader and ClassSense does not pretend to replace that. It handles selected-response and structured practice, which is the volume problem.
Can I override a score?
Yes. Mastery can be overridden by a teacher, and the override is recorded against your account.
Does it work with my school gradebook?
There is no automatic sync to district systems today. Most teachers run ClassSense alongside their LMS and transfer official grades themselves. If that matters to you, say so, because it affects what gets built next.
