ClassSense for 7th grade teachers

In a seventh grade room, one student is still shaky on fractions and the one beside them is ready for algebra. A single worksheet fits neither.

Seventh grade is the year the spread becomes impossible to ignore. Everyone has had the same calendar, and the range of readiness is wider than it will ever be again, because the students who were behind have not caught up and the ones who were ahead have kept going. Teaching to the middle fails both ends.

What is typical of the year

In many US courses seventh grade math is the pre-algebra year: proportional relationships and percent, operations with negative numbers, two-step equations and inequalities, and the first serious probability. Science is frequently life science, with cells, body systems and some genetics, which is heavy on vocabulary and on processes that students garble. History and English add longer reading assignments than anything before.

Why per-skill mastery matters most here

A seventh grader with a 70 percent is a vague fact. They might be missing one skill that everything else leans on, such as the rules for subtracting negatives, or they might be unsteady across the board. The Students grid puts a skill in each column and a child in each row, so the two cases look completely different. The first needs a ten-minute reteach. The second needs a different conversation.

Mastery in ClassSense is not a one-shot score: a skill reads Mastered only after at least five answers at about 85 percent accuracy, and mastered skills come back later for a quick check. For a unit on integers, that return visit is the part that shows whether the rules stuck or were borrowed for the quiz.

A worked example: integers

Say you upload your integer operations notes. The skill packs that come back might split adding with unlike signs, subtracting a negative, and multiplying and dividing signs into separate skills, each with named misconceptions. For integers those are predictable: that subtraction always makes a number smaller, that two negatives always give a negative, that the larger absolute value is ignored when adding. Because the wrong options on practice questions are deliberately tied to those named misconceptions, a wrong answer tells you which idea a child holds, not just that they missed it.

Life science is a vocabulary problem

For cells and body systems, upload the notes or the chapter and let the packs handle the terms. Students who will not make flashcards will play a game on organelle functions. Be aware that anything depending on a labelled diagram, a cell cross-section or a food web, will have been read as text only.

Equations as pictures. If your pre-algebra worksheets were exported with the math as images, the notation will not be read. Use the version where the expressions are real text, and try one unit before building a term around it.

What not to use it for

ClassSense does not place students into a pre-algebra or algebra track, and mastery data is not a placement test. Treat it as one input to a decision that belongs to you and your department. It also does not grade written explanations, such as "explain your reasoning", so those still come to you.

For students who are far behind on foundations, the sensible route is a separate short course made from earlier material. The practical steps are on students who fall behind, and the mixed-ability page covers running different work in one room.

Common questions

Can ClassSense tell me who belongs in algebra next year?

No. It reports mastery on the skills you upload. Course placement is a judgment that includes things it does not measure, and it does not claim to make it.

Do different students get different questions?

Students work through the same skill packs, but each student's mastery is tracked per skill, so you can see who needs which reteach. You can also build a separate course for a group.

Is there a way to keep struggling students from feeling labelled?

The class wall shows nicknames and badges, not scores or mastery levels. Mastery detail lives on your Students grid and on each student's own progress page.
