ClassSense for 8th grade teachers

Eighth grade ends with a handoff. What your students can and cannot do in May becomes the 9th grade team's problem in August.

Eighth grade carries two jobs at once. It finishes the middle school curriculum, and it prepares students, to different degrees, for a high school that expects them to manage themselves. Some of your students will take Algebra 1 with you for high school credit while the student next to them is still working on equations with a variable on one side.

What is typical of the year

In many places the math is linear relationships, slope, systems of equations, exponent rules and the first look at functions, with Algebra 1 as a parallel course for the students placed in it. Science is often physical science, so forces, motion, atoms and energy. Social studies is frequently American history through the nineteenth century or a civics course, and English focuses on argument and literary analysis. Spring brings end-of-year state tests in many states and registration for high school courses.

Three uses that earn their keep

The handoff list

Here is a use almost nobody plans for. In May, open the Students grid for each class and look at the columns where several students are still Struggling or Developing. Those are the skills the high school team will meet without knowing it. Write the list down by hand and give it to the ninth grade teachers. ClassSense does not produce a transcript or a formal report for the next school, and it does not transfer between teachers, so the list is yours to carry. The 9th grade page shows how they might use it.

The limits that matter in 8th grade. Graphs, slope diagrams and equations rendered as pictures do not survive extraction, and a linear functions unit leans on them. Argumentative writing in English and short written responses in science still come to you, because practice inside ClassSense is multiple choice. And if you teach Algebra 1 for credit, grades go into your district's system by hand: there is no sync.

A caution on end-of-year tests

ClassSense is not aligned to any state test, and we make no claim about how your students will do on one. What it does is give you consistent retrieval practice on the material you actually taught, with a record of who has shown mastery of what. If your state test is on your mind, use the test prep page for how to build that practice honestly, and the summer review page if you send work home in June.

For the subject-specific side, see algebra lessons. For the gap between the two schools, the next stop is high school teachers.

Common questions

Can I run Algebra 1 and regular math as separate courses?

Yes. Make one course per class or subject. Each has its own join code, and a student can join more than one course.

Does it align to our state test?

No. It follows the document you upload and makes no alignment claim. It gives you practice and a mastery record on what you taught.

Can I share a class's results with the high school?

ClassSense has no transfer feature between schools. You can read the Students grid and pass on a written list of the skills that were weak.

Start with one unit you already teach.

Upload it, see what comes back, and decide for yourself. Your first 30 days are free, then nineteen dollars a month with unlimited students.
