A parent who can see what their child is working on, and write to you when something is off, is a quieter source of help than a parent who finds out at report-card time. The setup is a short, manual process. ClassSense does not send the invitation for you, which is deliberate: you decide who gets a code and how it reaches them.
The steps
Open the student
In your course, go to the Students tab and click the student's row. A panel opens.
Generate the code
Under Parent Access, press Generate Invite. A code appears, with a Copy button.
Send it to the parent
Use your usual channel. ClassSense does not email it for you.
Parent links up
They create an account with the role Parent and enter the code on the Link a Child screen.
What to know about the code
- One code, one student, one course. Each code is tied to a specific student in that course.
- It works once. If a code has already been used, the next person who tries it is told it has already been used.
- Pressing Generate Invite again does not make a second code. If an unused code already exists for that student, ClassSense returns the same one.
- Pretend students cannot be invited. In the sample course, the request is refused because they have no parents.
What the parent can do
Once linked, a parent can follow their own child's progress and message you. Parents see only their own child, not the class. Their messages arrive in your Parent Messages, and the dashboard shows a card for unread ones, so you do not have to hunt for them. For more detail, see the parent portal page.
What to say when you send it
A short note works better than a long one. Something like this, adapted to your voice:
Hi, I am using ClassSense in class for practice. This code links your account to Maya's progress in my course. Create a Parent account at app.classsense.org, choose Link a Child, and enter the code. You will see her progress and can message me from there. If you would rather not, no problem.
Send each code to one family, not to a group email. A group message with a code in it invites the wrong person to use it.
Sensible expectations
- Not everyone will link. Plan for a minority, and keep your usual channels for the rest.
- It is not your gradebook. Official grades are transferred by hand. Tell parents the progress view is practice data, not a report card.
- Check your school's rules. Some schools have their own requirements for sharing student information with families. If you are unsure, ask your administrator. The FERPA page explains how ClassSense approaches student data, and it is not legal advice.
If a parent writes back
Treat parent messages like any other parent email: reply in your own words, keep it specific, and bring it back to a skill. "Maya is working on equivalent fractions and missing the ones with unlike denominators" lands better than a percentage. The mastery data guide helps you say that precisely.
Common questions
Does ClassSense email the invite to the parent?
No. You copy the code and send it yourself, so you control who receives it.
Can two parents link to the same child?
Each code works once and is tied to one student, and generating again while an unused code exists returns the same code. Ask us before promising a second guardian a link.
What can a parent see?
Their own child's progress, and a way to message you. They do not see the rest of the class.
Where do parent messages arrive?
In Parent Messages, with an unread count on your dashboard.
