ClassSense for English and ELA teachers

English teachers carry the heaviest grading load of any subject, so it matters to be straight about which half of it this removes and which half it does not.

Start with the honest part, because it decides whether the rest is worth reading.

ClassSense does not mark essays. Not badly, not provisionally, not at all. Extended writing is where your professional judgment lives, and automating it would mean pretending a model can weigh an argument the way you can. If essay grading is the load you need lifted, this is not the tool for that.

What it does take off you

The other load. The one that is less visible and, across a two weeks, larger:

Uploading literature

Upload your unit materials: the study guide, the annotated extracts, the context pack, the scheme of work. Whole copyrighted novels are a rights question rather than a technical one, and the practical answer is that your teaching materials about a text generate better than the text itself, because they carry the framing you want students to learn.

Why the misconception work matters here

Every skill pack names common misconceptions. In English these are the persistent ones: confusing the narrator with the author, treating a technique as an answer rather than a device, summarising when asked to analyze. Naming them explicitly in practice is more useful than correcting the same error in thirty books.

Common questions

Will it grade essays?

No. Extended writing needs a human reader, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest about what these models do well.

Can I upload a whole novel?

That is a copyright question more than a technical one. Your own teaching materials about a text generate better results anyway, because they carry your framing.

Does it work for language as well as literature?

Yes for the mechanical parts: grammar, vocabulary, technique identification. Composition remains yours.
