Make-up work fails in a predictable way. A student comes back, receives everything that was missed, does the easy parts, skips the hard ones and ends up behind in two ways: the content, and the stress. Meanwhile you are tracking who has what, which is a job in itself.
Triage first
Before you collect anything, ask what a student must have to take the next step in the unit. Sort the missed week into three piles.
- Essential. The ideas next week builds on. Two or three, usually.
- Useful. Practice that deepens the essentials. Nice, but optional.
- Skip. Activities that were about being in the room. Do not make anyone redo a class discussion on paper.
Hand over only the first pile, with a short note on what to do and in what order. A short, specific list gets done. A thick folder does not.
Other habits that help, with no software at all
- Keep one clear place where the week's materials live, so a student can find them without asking you.
- Offer a ten minute catch-up conversation on the essential idea. It beats the worksheet.
- Check understanding with two or three questions on return, then decide whether more is needed.
- Be clear about what is expected, and gentle about timing. A student who was ill does not need a penalty for it.
How ClassSense can carry part of it
If a unit is in your course as published skill packs, a student who missed the lesson can open the pack and get what a lesson gave: an explanation at three depths, worked examples and then practice with hints and feedback. They do it at their own pace, and it needs no copying on your side. Mastery updates as they answer, so when they come back you can see in the Students grid whether the skill is Struggling or Approaching or Mastered, instead of guessing from a completed sheet.
You tell students which packs to open. There is no assignment scheduling in ClassSense and no dates attached to work, so the "when" is an instruction you give, the same as before. For a student who prefers paper, or has no device at home, Create Content can generate a Worksheet or Assessment from the same skill pack as a .docx you print. Parents who are linked through the parent portal can see their own child's progress, which can help a conversation at home.
Triage the missed week
Pick the two or three essential skills.
Point them at those packs
Tell the student which published skill packs to open and what to do first.
Check the grid
See which skills moved. Anything still red gets ten minutes with you.
What it will not do. It does not remember who was absent, send reminders, track what is overdue or hold a gradebook. Practice in the app is multiple choice, so it will not replace a lab write-up or an essay a student missed. It reads the material you uploaded, so a missed discussion or a hands-on activity is not in a skill pack. Students need a device and a way in to the course.
If the gap is bigger than a week, students who fall behind covers the longer road. A study guide for a returning student can also come from the study guide generator.
Common questions
Can I assign make-up work with a deadline in ClassSense?
No. There is no scheduling or deadline feature. You tell students which skill packs to work through, and you can see their progress in the grid.
What if a student has no device at home?
Generate a Worksheet or Assessment from the skill pack in Create Content and print it. The .docx can be handed out like any other document.
Will it show me that they caught up?
It shows mastery per skill as they practice. A skill needs at least five answers at about 85% to read Mastered, so a quick glance tells you more than a completed sheet does.
Does a skill pack replace the lesson they missed?
It replaces the explanation and practice, not the discussion, lab or conversation. Those you may need to cover another way.
